Picnic Safety...things to consider

For your safety and the safety of your guests:
* Use only licensed and insured caterers. Make sure their staff is covered with workers compensation.

Check a caterers license at the catering category  https://www.myfloridalicense.com/licensing/wl14.jsp

*Use only licensed and insured event companies. Make sure that all amusement rides are attended by adults. Ask vendor for their insurance certificate.  Check that the amusement you are renting is not excluded from event company's insurance policy.

*
Make sure all food comes from licensed commissaries. Some amusement companies sell cotton candy, snow cones and hot dogs without health department permission. Call the hotel and restaurant commission if you are not sure.
*
Make sure alcoholic beverages are attended and dispensed per state law.
*
Your DJ should be asked to do a safety speech to make people cognizant of their children's whereabouts at all times. Never let children go to rest rooms alone at public parks.
*
Dangerous games like "tug o war" should be avoided. There are plenty of exciting activities that you could have fun with that won't spoil your picnic if things don't go right.
*
Don't forget the sun block and the first aid kit.
*R
emember that ice is one of the biggest offenders in food born ailments. Sterilize your containers and handle carefully.
*
If you rent a "dunk tank" make sure the vendor sanitizes the water with chlorine or other substance. Most vendors don't - so ask!
*
Your caterer should remember the safe temperatures for food service and handle foods carefully. It may not be a great idea to take home foods that have been left out of safe temperature range for more than three hours.
***We do not recommend petting zoos. They are full of potentially lethal bacteria such as Ecoli and Salmonella. If you attend a picnic with a petting zoo make sure you have hand sanitizer in your picnic safety kit.
*Avoid bringing pets to picnics.
*
Don't feed the ducks and other animals at parks. They will cause unsanitary conditions and at times will bite.
*Lock valuables in your trunk. Public parks can't protect you from everything. Be smart.
*
Lightning kills more people in Florida every year than shark attacks worldwide.Be lightning "savey"- bring your guests inside at the first sign of lightning.
With a little forethought you can have a safe, exciting picnic.
